Octoverse 2026: Indonesia ranks 7th and AI agents now start 40% of pull requests
GitHub's Octoverse 2026 report shows record activity, Indonesia as the 7th largest developer community, and AI agents drafting more than 40% of pull requests. The key numbers and what they mean for companies building software.

Octoverse 2026, GitHub's yearly report published on 28 October 2026, shows three things at once: record activity, a fast-growing developer community in Indonesia, and AI agents writing a large share of new code. Indonesia now has 6.34 million developers on GitHub, the 7th largest community in the world. By September 2026, more than 40% of pull requests on GitHub started from an AI agent's first draft.
This article sums up the numbers that matter for businesses, explains what they mean for how software gets built, and lists practical steps if your company plans a new app or system in 2027.
Octoverse 2026 in numbers: a record year on GitHub

According to the Octoverse 2026 report, which covers the 12 months ending 30 September across public and private repositories:
- 17.9 billion pushes, more than 2024 and 2025 combined.
- 34.3 billion commits, more than three times the level of two years ago.
- 1.3 billion merged pull requests, an average of 3.5 million a day.
- More than 225 million developers now use GitHub.
Indonesia is now the 7th largest developer community

Indonesia counts 6.34 million developers on GitHub as of September 2026, just ahead of Germany (6.30 million), Russia and France. The United States (38.3 million) and India (32.0 million) remain the two largest communities.
Indonesia is also growing fast. Last year GitHub published 2030 projections per country. One year in, Indonesia has already covered 45.4% of the distance to its own 2030 figure, second only to Morocco (54.4%). For companies that hire or outsource development, that means a large and growing local talent pool.
AI agents now draft a large share of code

- More than 40% of pull requests started from an AI agent's first draft by September 2026, up from 17% in March.
- 110 million agent pull requests in September alone, about six times March's volume.
- 90% of agent pull requests were merged within two weeks in September, compared with about 86% for pull requests without detected agent involvement.
- 8x more commits: among repositories created this year, those with an agent configuration file logged eight times as many commits as those without one.
GitHub notes that agent signals are a floor: not every use of AI is detected, so the real share may be higher.
Why it matters for your business
The cost of producing a first draft of code is falling quickly. The cost of checking that code is not. An agent can open a pull request in minutes, but someone still has to decide whether it is correct, secure and maintainable before it reaches your customers.
That shifts what you should look for in a development partner. Speed matters, but so do review discipline, tests and a release process that catches mistakes. Teams that pair agents with engineers who own those steps get the speed without the risk. We wrote about the same idea in our guide to small pull requests and faster releases.
What to do if you are planning software in 2027
- Ask how your vendor uses AI. Which parts are drafted by agents, and who reviews them before merge?
- Require tests and code review on every change. Agent pull requests should go through the same checks as human ones.
- Secure your pipeline. More automated changes means more reasons to protect secrets and CI/CD, as covered in securing your CI/CD pipeline.
- Own your source code. Make sure the repository, including any agent configuration files, belongs to your company.
- Consider local talent. Indonesia's developer community is large and still growing, which helps with cost and time zone fit. See our take on the AI talent gap: hire or partner.

Frequently asked questions
What is GitHub Octoverse 2026?
Octoverse is GitHub's yearly report on activity across the platform. The 2026 edition was published on 28 October 2026 and covers the 12 months ending 30 September 2026. It reported 17.9 billion pushes, 34.3 billion commits and 1.3 billion merged pull requests across public and private repositories.
How many developers does Indonesia have on GitHub?
Indonesia had 6.34 million developers on GitHub in September 2026, the 7th largest community in the world, just ahead of Germany with 6.30 million. Indonesia has also covered 45.4% of the distance to GitHub's 2030 projection for the country, the second fastest after Morocco.
How much code do AI agents write on GitHub?
By September 2026, more than 40% of pull requests on GitHub started from an AI agent's first draft, up from 17% in March. Agents started 110 million pull requests in September alone, and 90% of agent pull requests were merged within two weeks.
Does AI-written code still need human review?
Yes. Agents can produce drafts quickly, but a person still has to check that the change is correct, secure and maintainable. Tests, code review and a controlled release process remain the safest way to ship agent-drafted code to production.
